Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) — WYGS Solar PV Homeowner Guide

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) — WYGS Solar PV Homeowner Guide

Helping West Yorkshire homeowners get the best value from their solar investment.

🌞 What Is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK government-backed scheme that pays homeowners for the
renewable electricity they export back to the grid.
If you have solar panels, a battery, or other renewable technology, SEG ensures you receive a payment for every
kilowatt-hour (kWh) you don’t use and send back to the National Grid.

SEG launched in January 2020 and replaced the old Feed‑in Tariff (FiT).
Energy suppliers known as SEG Licensees must offer at least one export tariff to eligible generators.

  • Available to homes with solar PV, wind, hydro, AD, or micro‑CHP (up to 5MW).
  • You must have a smart meter capable of half‑hourly export readings.
  • SEG is available across England, Scotland, and Wales.

📝 How Do You Apply for SEG?

Applying for SEG is straightforward, but you must have the correct documentation in place. Here’s the WYGS step‑by‑step guide:

  1. Choose your SEG provider — you don’t need to use the same company that supplies your electricity.
  2. Gather your documents:
    • MCS Certificate
    • DNO approval (G98/G99)
    • Smart meter export capability
    • Proof of ID and address
  3. Submit your application via the supplier’s website.
  4. Provide export meter readings (if required) or allow automatic smart meter readings.
  5. Receive payments — usually monthly or quarterly depending on the supplier.

WYGS provides all required installation documentation, including MCS certificates and DNO notifications, making your SEG application smooth and stress‑free.
