Rigid phenolic or PIR boards

They are often installed as insulated plasterboard or within a framed build-up. However, high thermal performance on paper does not remove the need for good workmanship. Gaps, poorly sealed joints and weak detailing around openings can reduce the real-world benefit.

Mineral wool

Wood fibre and other breathable insulation
For traditional solid wall buildings, especially those built with lime mortar or more porous masonry, breathable materials such as wood fibre can be very suitable. These systems are designed to allow moisture movement through the wall rather than trapping it.
That can be important in older homes where impermeable materials may increase the risk of damp patches or mould if the wall cannot dry properly. The trade-off is usually cost and thickness. Breathable systems can be more expensive and may require specialist installation knowledge.
